Their mission is to\u00a0burn books and stories, the last vestiges of independent thought in a society obsessed with comfort, conformity, and censorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/scarletthreads\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_625318281_Editorial_Use_Only_compressed-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1873 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 768px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 768\/1024;width:291px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Adobe Stock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Bradbury&#8217;s dystopia was fictional, its echoes&nbsp;ring louder than ever today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across schools and libraries in the United States,\u00a0Canada and beyond, books are once again under\u00a0\u00a0fire , not by flamethrowers, but by legislation, school boards, and parent groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/book-bans\/2023-banned-book-list\/\">PEN Canada<\/a> found \u2018a dramatic rise in\u00a0book bans\u2019 across North America.\u00a0Disproportionately silencing stories centred on\u00a0gender, sexuality, and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commonly used term \u2018book bans\u2019 doesn\u2019t&nbsp;mean books are inaccessible. It instead refers to&nbsp;the removal of diversified voices in education. A&nbsp;much more silent but deadly control. One that&nbsp;people may not even be aware of.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seen through the scorched pages of Fahrenheit 451, this suppression isn\u2019t just an\u00a0 attack on free speech, it\u2019s about whose stories are deemed acceptable and whose aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this new era of censorship, the question isn\u2019t just what we\u2019re banning, but who<em> <\/em>we\u2019re silencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Curriculum as Silent Censorship<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cSchool is shortened\u2026 finally almost completely ignored.\u201d &#8211; Ray Bradbury,&nbsp; Fahrenheit 451<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canada, books aren\u2019t often banned outright. No&nbsp;dramatic removals or public hearings. They were written by a\u00a0 man\u2026 there was never anything about the suffragette movement\u00a0or anything like The Handmaid\u2019s\u00a0 Tale,\u201d Amanda says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe curriculum absolutely still silences female authors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consequences of this gender bias extend beyond inclusion , they shape student engagement and conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the classroom, young women tend to be more reserved in discussions. \u201cThey&nbsp;haven\u2019t seen that representation,\u201d she explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exposure to female perspectives,&nbsp; she argues, could encourage more inclusive dialogue. Meanwhile, young men,&nbsp;having seen male characters navigate moral complexity, are more confident in difficult conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Books by women are often excluded because they tend to tackle controversial&nbsp;issues including feminism, LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive justice that challenge power structures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of female authors aren\u2019t afraid to talk about controversial subjects,\u201d Amanda says.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The censorship of books like The Handmaid\u2019s Tale, which she sees as developmentally valuable,  is part of a broader attempt to \u201ckeep a lot of women\u00a0 submissive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some school boards argue that curricular decisions are made based on educational value, developmental appropriateness, and resource availability, not censorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others point to the importance of avoiding&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201ccontroversial\u201d topics that may draw complaints from&nbsp;parents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for teachers like Isabelle Richardson, who&nbsp;teaches junior high in Canada, that caution results in a&nbsp;quieter, more insidious exclusion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcMAVVqwmf_aMF5G13GCEiyUGSEa70TpR3xueKP_QP77epEheIyMDeQM2waczSVBXz88FCOECGpn9JBnn_fBj1X9ehlYn7pXCw3d4KEzASd52ZR0r4ewP5otvibDnc86E9rrYy3?key=xXrF9KaBp48CZIwH1KIhYg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:244px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Isabelle Richardson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs far as like queer or female representation, I wouldn&#8217;t&nbsp;say that there&#8217;s a tonne. Definitely not a noticeable&nbsp;amount\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that any book that gets kids to think further, or&nbsp;reflect on themselves or on society, is really valuable to&nbsp;have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even dystopian fiction holds a mirror to reality and a power far beyond its genre: \u201cSome of these seemingly dystopian books\u00a0 aren&#8217;t actually as dystopian as you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXe-EZ-OewwI9bfXpKsDnO6vlMO0A91vVcSM0wdejtlIfu4kEDZllXl9TXXnJTuMrZffh51019qU4SUkKZrEn6LBRIhrMO2bYfvJ8kqj82vq2HB4WhQCsypDTHTPCYEwVvx4MiKy9A?key=xXrF9KaBp48CZIwH1KIhYg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:293px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Courtesy of Isabelle Richardson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Parts of those dystopian stories can relate to what we see now, which is\u00a0alarming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education is impacted when young people don\u2019t see themselves in what they\u2019re\u00a0 reading, as their engagement falters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to know if frustration builds\u00a0amongst my students because it&#8217;s very hard\u00a0 to get kids engaged with what they&#8217;re\u00a0 reading,\u201d Isabelle says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe miss out on their thoughts and reactions because they&#8217;re just not engaged&nbsp;enough to have a strong opinion, which is unfortunate.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, book bans are not just about content, they are about control. And in\u00a0classrooms, that control often comes at the cost of diverse, equitable education.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Canada\u2019s approach to censorship is quieter, lurking in omissions and curricular choices, it reflects a larger, more volatile battle erupting just across the border.\u00a0\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Book bans as a political weapon<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cIf you don&#8217;t want a man unhappy politically, don&#8217;t give him two sides to a question to&nbsp; worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none.\u201d &#8211; Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Censorship may look different north of the border, but the result is similar: stories\u00a0that challenge the status quo, by and about women are erased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXeHsemhTJOuwoNp5wgUtD3OnqIKA-PdqBcGiXjlKTE5LUlaRSg0oOKUBsmPCs-XD2wp9JN1Y47q3z-ymTvHdGohjgUG7fHtKnKYH2JgJ6uYt_z2j9PlDXI_IAq3avRkHy_Ar3p5Cw?key=xXrF9KaBp48CZIwH1KIhYg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:256px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Jack LaViolette<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack LaViolette, a PhD student in sociology at Columbia, doesn\u2019t just see book bans as attempts to control what kids read, he sees them\u00a0as political theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBanning books is not an effective way of actually&nbsp;restricting access to content\u2026 it is largely symbolic,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s largely about the persistent need to construct an&nbsp;enemy and to construct a threat.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He points out that the books targeted most often&nbsp;tend to centre queer characters, people of colour,&nbsp;and women, which he ties directly to a broader&nbsp;political pattern: \u201cMost conservative politics is anti women in some way or another,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/book-bans\/2023-banned-book-list\/\">PEN America<\/a> found in 2023 alone, over 3,300 books\u00a0were challenged or banned in U.S. schools and libraries, the majority featuring\u00a0 LGBTQ+ characters, protagonists of colour, or themes of gender equality.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That kind of bias, LaViolette warns, turns schools into \u201carenas for political\u00a0resentment,\u201d stripping away their role as safe, open spaces,  especially those\u00a0already most at risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s still lots of queer kids and Black kids,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s still people who\u00a0deserve to feel legitimate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For LaViolette, these bans are about whose stories get told and who gets to feel\u00a0seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, we\u2019re witnessing \u201ca symbolic response to status threat\u201d that could lead to deeper cultural fragmentation, a kind of \u201ccultural balkanisation\u201d dividing schools and\u00a0 students, LaViolette warns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Bradbury\u2019s world, the fire was loud. Pages turned to ash in a public display of\u00a0control. Today, the flame is quieter, more bureaucratic than blazing, but its damage\u00a0is no less real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Books by and about women, queer voices, and those who challenge\u00a0 the norm aren\u2019t always banned with ceremony. They\u2019re simply left off the shelf.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In classrooms across Canada and beyond, stories that reflect real, diverse\u00a0experiences are missing. Not because they aren\u2019t worth reading, but because they make some people uncomfortable. Because they ask too many questions.
