It was 1981. Patti was 17 when she jumped on the bandwagon of <\/a>Van Halen<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>and worked for their merch team. \u201cIt was fucking awesome,\u201d she recalls. She was lucky enough to meet Mr Van Halen himself. \u201cI met Eddie twice whilst working. The first time he was so rude,\u201d she explained. \u201cI asked him for an autograph, he then huffed, checked his shoulders, rolled his eyes, grabbed the paper scribbled his signature and then chucked it back at me.\u201d Patti said the second time Eddie was the \u201csweetest, most adorable guy\u201d when he knocked on her door asking for the rooming list. \u201cHe gave me the sweetest smile, utterly gorgeous, a totally different human,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patti also met David Lee Roth, Van Halen\u2019s lead singer. In fact, he invited her back to his room after he called her into the lift at the hotel they shared. \u201cAfter a bit of flirting and a line of cocaine, he asked me, \u2018Talk me through your thoughts lovely\u2019 and I stumbled to him, \u2018You’re fucking gorgeous\u2019 being a naive 17-year-old, he replied, \u2018You\u2019re not so bad yourself honey.\u2019” He offered her to join him in the shower, but she declined. She had one strict rule to follow\u2026 Don\u2019t mingle with the band. \u201cGoing back to his room was the beginning of the end of my time with Van Halen,\u201d she said. At the end of the tour, she was dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real reason Patti stepped into the lifestyle was to follow the bands she loved growing up. Her bedroom was awash with Van Halen posters. The second reason was more ominous. \u201cI did have issues at home, a boy also had broken my heart, I guess that\u2019s why I went.\u201d But once in, she said: \u201cI felt so valued in the scene by these amazing people I just couldn\u2019t leave (\u2026) but to be wanted by David, your self-confidence boosts, I know it sounds superficial, but it\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After leaving Van Halen, she was a groupie with rockers in smaller bands in the metal scene like Krokus and Ratt before hitting it big again touring with the likes of M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce, Mot\u00f6rhead, and Bon Jovi<\/em><\/strong> whilst she was dating Joey Alves, lead guitarist of supporting band Y&T<\/em><\/strong>. This is where she came face-to-face with her holy grail. Patti explained a \u201choly grail\u201d is a groupie\u2019s \u201cbiggest rock \u2018n\u2019 roll crush\u201d. Patti\u2019s was Nikki Sixx, bassist of M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce. \u201cI was standing next to him when Y&T were playing, and I couldn\u2019t look at him. \u201cIf I did, I would have exploded,\u201d she said with a sigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aged 21, she left the metal scene and headed for the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood and got herself a job as a waitress at the legendary club, The Rainbow Bar and Grill. The club held members from Led Zeppelin to the Sex Pistols<\/em><\/strong>. Patti worked there for almost a decade. She still has the entrance ticket she bought on the second day she walked through the doors when she landed the job. The Rainbow is where she met her first lover in the Hollywood scene, Taime Downe. He was working at a local retailer at the time but would become lead singer of Faster Pussycat<\/em><\/strong>. She met him on her first night working at the venue. Patti explained: \u201cHe was fucking gorgeous; I say he\u2019s the male version of Marilyn Monroe.\u201d They romanced for four months until they drifted. Yet Patti says they are still great friends. The Rainbow is also where she befriended other legends such as Lee Rocker<\/em><\/strong> and John Entwistle, The Who<\/em><\/strong> bassist. But Lemmy, bassist of Mot\u00f6rhead, was her greatest. \u201cHe wrote on a letter he sent me \u2018you are my lion-hearted friend,\u2019\u201d she explained. The pair hit it off one night whilst she was working at the club and stayed great friends. \u201cHe only lived a block away from the club and was always over; we loved it,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was just the best, so genuine and sincere.\u201d Lemmy would even let Patti read his lyrics. After Patti left The Rainbow in 1993, they stayed in contact through letters and texts until he died in 2015. \u201cHe was the only person I allowed to call me Pat,\u201d she giggled. \u201cHe said it without making me sound like a 60-year-old chain smoker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her time in Los Angeles holds another memorable moment as she also met George Harrison at a local radio station. \u201cWhen I caught the news, I ran down with a friend and waited in the reception for him.\u201d Patti tells this next bit in her best scouse accent. \u201cI asked him for an autograph, and he replied, \u2018Who is it for,\u2019 and I replied, \u2018For Patti\u2019 he said, \u2018Oh for Patti is it’ whilst rolling his eyes.\u201d For those who don\u2019t know, Patti Boyd is also the name of George\u2019s ex-wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came Billy Idol<\/em><\/strong>. She met him at The Rainbow. too \u201cI remember the first time he called me (\u2026) I was going crazy, five octaves too high, the weirdness, ugh.\u201d That was after the second time she met him. When he left the club, she handed him her number on the ripped casing of a pack of matches. \u201cI was blasting his tune Feld for Fantasy when I got home, not expecting him to call, but when he did, I jumped on it,\u201d she explained. \u201cI turned down the music and I said to him, \u2018Sorry for the music, I\u2019m just getting my Billy Idol fix to which he replied, \u2018Really, really, would you like the real thing,\u2019 I then shot over to his place.\u201d Patti says he was a \u201creal charmer\u201d and \u201csuch a great man\u201d. She said Billy was \u201cone of the only men\u201d who asked for consent before sex and Patti also has high praise for him in this department. \u201cHe probably was one of the best lovers I had (\u2026) sex with him was fucking great,\u201d she explained. \u201cThe track To Be A Lover<\/em>, in the music video when he\u2019s fucking the floor, that\u2019s what he looked like having sex.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patti agreed in the world of music the word \u2018groupie\u2019 has succumbed to three words: Love, music, and sex\u2026 That order. \u201cGroupies are bands guardian angels\u201d, said Patti. \u201cThey are their therapist, their mummy, their bestie, their sister, and their lover. \u201cThe word groupie has many strings attached.\u201d However, she says to be a groupie it \u201cisn\u2019t just about sex\u201d. \u201cIt\u2019s there, it has to be, but we are also muses, but most importantly music lovers and that\u2019s why we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She tells of a time when her friend Tim Stegall, a journalist, came to her defence after a woman snarled at the word. \u201cThe woman said, \u2018Being a groupie is not about sex\u2019, it\u2019s all about the music.\u2019 \u201cTim then stepped in and replied, \u2018What are they going to do whilst talking music, bake brownies?\u2019\u201d She believes the stereotype is \u201cstuck in a different time.\u201d To Patti, she\u2019s most proud of the fact that groupies have \u201cinspired\u201d some of people\u2019s \u201cfavourite artists\u201d and \u201cfavourite songs\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patti now lives with her husband and children in Colorado. She describes herself as trustworthy, loyal, and loving. Her stories live up to these words to the tee. \u201cBut most of all,\u201d she says, \u201cI will always be a proud groupie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
