Well \u2013 let me answer my own question. No, there isn\u2019t a musical void in the West Midlands and actually, there\u2019s a lot to be proud of. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Past and present there is a rich selection of musical talent in and from Birmingham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Black Sabbath<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n First and foremost, Black Sabbath<\/em><\/strong> hails from Aston. Sabbath are the fathers of heavy metal and perhaps the most influential band to come out of \u2018Brum\u2019. Featuring Ozzy Osbourne\u2019s hauntingly unique voice and his let\u2019s say, \u2018eccentric\u2019 stage presence, he takes his moniker as the Prince of Darkness seriously. Tony Iommi on the guitar, who despite losing two fingertips due to a factory accident thrashed out powerful riffs that could resurrect Satan himself. Geezer Butler on the bass alongside Bill Ward on the drums combined to make one of the most complete rhythm sections in heavy metal history.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n While I admit metal is one of the more divisive genres of music, without Sabbath a lot of other bands wouldn\u2019t have been the same. Kurt Cobain, Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll legend and frontman and lead guitarist of Nirvana<\/em><\/strong> cited Sabbath as one of his biggest musical influences (alongside another Birmingham band\u2026), Chris Cornell, the frontman of Soundgarden loved Sabbath and Metallica alongside a plethora of other bands have stated the importance of Black Sabbath as an influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Robert Plant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Moving away from metal, Robert Plant (lead singer of Led Zeppelin<\/em><\/strong>) is from West Bromwich which may be the Black Country, but as\u00a0it’s\u00a0only a stone\u2019s throw from Birmingham and has a \u2018B\u2019 postcode I\u2019m including him. He is an icon of classic rock, Plant wrote one of the most famous rock songs of all time\u00a0in\u00a0Stairway to Heaven<\/em>, in doing this his vocals have transcended the ages and cemented Plant\u2019s place as one of rock\u2019s greatest-ever singers and songwriters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jeff Lynne<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jeff Lynne\u2019s ELO<\/em><\/strong> are the other Birmingham band that Kurt Cobain cited as a musical influence and this in itself is perhaps enough to warrant a place in this article. However, regardless of Cobain\u2019s plaudits, Jeff Lynne\u2019s Electric Light Orchestra is worthy of a place by its own merits.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jeff Lynne, in my opinion, is the greatest music producer of his time. If ELO started today, they would still feel futuristic and Jeff Lynne\u2019s attention to detail coupled with an almost \u2018space-age\u2019 sound\u00a0are\u00a0undeniably iconic. As well as producing all of ELO\u2019s songs such as Mr. Blue Sky<\/em> and Don\u2019t Bring Me Down<\/em>, Lynne wrote all of the lyrics, sang on the tracks, and played guitar for ELO.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n If this still isn\u2019t enough, Lynne as well as being a member of the supergroup the Travelling Wilburys produced songs for: Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bryan Adams and Roy Orbison among others. Because of this, Jeff Lynne deserves to be known as one of music\u2019s greats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Others\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The previous artists and bands are probably Brum\u2019s biggest musical exports but there are others worthy of mention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 UB40<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 an English reggae band, most famous for their song Red Red Wine. Ex-lead singer Ali Campbell even allegedly owes my dad a pint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Dexy\u2019s Midnight Runners<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 who have iconic songs in their repertoire such as Come on Eileen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Christie McVi<\/em><\/strong>e \u2013 keyboardist and singer\/songwriter for Fleetwood Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Duran Duran <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 a pop-rock group famous for songs such as Girls on Film and Hungry Like the Wolf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 JAWS <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 an indie-rock band formed in 2012 who are one of the brightest bands to come out of Birmingham recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hopefully, this article has shown that the Brummies can hold a musical candle to the Mancs, Scousers and Londoners. Birmingham has a rich, noisy history and a bright future with bands like JAWS and Mantarray.
