Construction on South Yorkshire’s new tram train station has reached a key stage as lift shafts and a new passenger overbridge have now been installed at the upcoming Magna Tram Train station in Rotherham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The \u00a310 million project, due to open in early 2026, will connect the Tram Train route between Sheffield and Rotherham, providing better access for residents, businesses and visitors to the Magna Science Adventure Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The station will also help reduce congestion and pollution in the Lower Don Valley and support regeneration across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire Mayor, said: “It\u2019s brilliant to see real progress being made at Magna. We\u2019re building a better-connected South Yorkshire.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The station will feature fully accessible platforms, step-free access via lifts and a pedestrian bridge linking both sides of the tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Magna Station is being delivered by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in partnership with Network Rail and Supertram, with funding from the UK Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Network Rail sponsor Roisin Lowery said: “We\u2019re proud to be working with our partners to deliver what will be a major step forward in improving connectivity in this part of South Yorkshire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The station is the first new Tram Train stop to be added to the network since the pioneering services launched in 2018, expected to open up access to jobs, education and leisure for thousands of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Construction is being led by Barnsley-based AmcoGiffen, employing local workers and sourcing materials regionally while building the station’s footbridge and lift shafts at its Barnsley fabrication facility, supporting South Yorkshire’s manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
AmcoGiffen Operations Director Peter Laws said: “This project has been a true collaboration between all partners, and we\u2019re delighted to be delivering it safely, efficiently, and to schedule, helping to create lasting benefits for the community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new Magna Tram Train station forms part of SMYCA’s \u00a3110 million investment in the Supertram network by 2027, which includes upgrades to trams, power systems and control infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tram Train services will continue as normal during construction, except on Saturday evenings when replacement buses will operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
