The government launched the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Fund (RSASF) back in 2011 as part of a scheme to financially help out victim support services by 2025 compared to 2010.
But why did they take this step?
The government started the End-to-End Rape Review following a drastic decline of rape prosecutions and, therefore, fewer convictions.
This led women to believe that rape was no longer being treated as a serious crime.
In the review, former MP Sir Robert Buckland, stated that one in two victims would withdraw from rape investigations.
He said: “These are trends of which we are deeply ashamed.”
Acknowledging their failure to properly support victims and survivors, the government issued an apology.
This marked a turning point where they embarked on a new mission to understand why victims were being let down by the system, committing to a series of actions designed to tackle this issue.
Fast forward to 2023, there was the launch of the RSASF grant.
In South Yorkshire, Barnsley, Sheffield and Doncaster won the award receiving over £1 million combined.
