A Rotherham NHS charity is encouraging people to ‘unleash their inner elves’ for its latest fundraising event.

Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity is hosting their annual ‘elf service’ week from next week.

This fundraiser event will take place from 11 to 17 December to boost its Tiny Toes’ appeal. This year the event includes a Christmas Jumper Day for 14 December.

The charity aims to raise £150,000 to fund the redevelopment of the hospital’s neonatal unit.

Earlier this month, Rotherham-based boxer, Junaid Bostan helped raise £750 for the appeal by selling his boxing gloves and tickets to a match.

Rachael Dawes, Head of Fundraising, said: “We have been absolutely bowled over by the support for our Tiny Toes appeal so far and are thrilled that Junaid fundraised by auctioning his gloves and match tickets.

“All the funds from amazing people like Junaid raised will help us reach our ambitious £150,000 target and will enable us to enhance the neonatal facilities at Rotherham Hospital.

“We want to create a wonderful home from home for the families we care for and their precious newborns. The funds Junaid has raised could help to fund toys and books for siblings, a recliner chairs for each cot side, sensory equipment, furniture for parent bedrooms, artwork or skylights to make the ward brighter.

“If Junaid has inspired you to fundraise too, we’d love to hear from you.”

The current neonatal unit was built 40 years ago and is constantly in use by the parents and the facilities are ‘now worn and outdated’.

Statistics show around 10 percent of babies, 1 in 13, are born in poor conditions and the charity is responsible for taking care of more than 400 premature and poorly born babies each year.

Alison Cowie, Head of Nursing for Children’s Services at Rotherham NHS  Foundation Trust, said: “Every penny raised during Elf Service Week will help us to provide the best equipment and facilities we can for  the families we care for, creating a home from home when they need it the most.”

The Trust aims to completely ‘refurbish’ and ‘future proof’ the unit to be used by ‘generations to come’ and the charity is fundraising for added extras.

Ms Dawes added: “Our Tiny Toes appeal is really heartfelt for us because we know that every penny raised will make a massive difference to the most vulnerable patients we care for and their parents.

“Our National Elf Service Week is a really important milestone in our fundraising for the appeal and we hope to inspire everyone in Rotherham to embrace their inner elf and to take part at school, work or at home.

“Whether you wear your super sweaters, take part in a sponsored challenge or host a bake sale every penny will make a difference.

“We hope to raise £10,000 this year.”
