Council greenlights £365k Investment in seven new EV charging stations

Rotherham Council accelerates towards a ‘Greener Future’ with the expansion of electric charging points. 

In a move aimed at helping the city be sustainable by 2025, the council has taken to develop the charging infrastructure across the community.  

David Allan, 59, Rotherham resident, said: “I believe the commitment the council is making towards adding more electric charging points is crucial to moving away from internal combustion engines 

“I own a Polestar and compared to the running cost of a regular diesel car is light and day.”

The expansion outlined by the council aims to add more charging stations as well as improve the existing infrastructure.

The goal is to accommodate and encourage the growing use of electric vehicles, a transition to low-carbon modes of transportation. 

Councillor Dominic Beck said: “One of our main aims is to make sure the availability of EV charges is expanded across the borough so we have been making great progress, we have over 40 charging points we hope to net zero by 2040.”

In the report outlined by the council, the first option suggests weighing the possibilities of installing the charging stations at the planned seven sites.

These seven sites would then be the next step in expanding the EV infrastructure across the borough as well supporting the councils climate change plan. 

The funding for the project will be made by the South Yorkshire combined authority will total to £365,000 for the seven sites.

The Seven sites include Greenlands Park N Aston, Clifton Park Doncaster Road, Aburnum Parade Maltby, Greasborough Library, Kiveton Park Library, Main St Rotherham and Mowbray Gardens Library. 

The second option highlights the possibility to not to proceed with the expansion unless there is a significant increase in charging capacity. 

Councillor Beck added: “These seven sites are considered the best option considering the constraints that we are dealing with.

“The second option also goes against our commitment to ensuring Rotherham is greener by the end of the year.”
