What is North Star?

The North Star Science School is a one-day live event tailored for school children in years eight and nine.

The goal is to integrate science with curiosity and play, with the aim of stimulating and inspiring the next generation to explore the diverse range of careers in STEAM subjects.

This is accomplished by showcasing the latest developments in science and engineering and promoting innovation and opportunity in the South Yorkshire region. Up to that point, North Star events had reached over 3,000 young people from across South Yorkshire.

Why South Yorkshire ?

South Yorkshire reflects a rich industrial heritage shaped by the influence of STEAM.

Rotherham has re-established itself as a hub for world-class manufacturing, hosting The Advanced Manufacturing Park developed by Harworth, and the broader South Yorkshire Innovation District leading developments.

Mrs Amos said: “Definitely in South Yorkshire there is a massive need in the region as so many people are not aware of the innovation that is happening on their doorstep.

“I think this can be very useful to the next generation because many are not aware of the many job opportunities that are available when you take a career in science and engineering.”

The event serves as a notable destination in the UK for individuals to connect, collaborate, and innovate, attracting diverse business and investment from various parts of the world.

This year, several schools are collaborating with sponsors to jointly create workshops as part of a year-round program.

Mrs Amos said: “I would definitely recommend for any child who attends this event to take full advantage of it get involved with the workshops ask lots of questions curiosity is a big thing with kids nowadays and we want them to show it.”

The North Star Event was Established in 2012 by Professor Brian Cox CBE and Lord Andrew Mawson OBE, the Science Summer School program aims to contribute to the development of science and engineering in Britain.

North Star is part of the Science School initiative in South Yorkshire.

Originally designed to address challenges in a school in East London, the Science Summer School programme has expanded nationally.

Mrs Amos added: “The future of science is bright there are many ways young kids can get involved not only in this event but outside of this event whether that is curricular activities or practical lessons in school.”

New projects that directly engage with local communities are being implemented nationwide, with South Yorkshire actively participating in these initiatives.
