The student discount fares have been terminated, leading to higher fees for the young people of South Yorkshire.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) made the decision to terminate the student discount fare of just 80p for single journeys and instead charge the full fee.

A spokesperson for SYMCA said: “[The] SYMCA Board took the difficult decision in July to stop funding the Zoom Beyond 18-21 discount in order to free up funds to protect evening and Sunday bus services.”

However, a few operators have agreed to offer a discount themselves after intervention by the Mayor Oliver Coppard.

SYMCA added: “Anyone with a Zoom Beyond 18-21 Pass will now pay £1.50 on services run by First, Stagecoach and TM Travel. On trams, single fares are capped at £2. The card can also be used to get discounted Travelmaster tickets. Full adult fares will apply on services run by other bus operators.”
