More than 4,000 people have visited the ‘moon replica’ art exhibition installed at the Rotherham Minster.
Artist Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon is finally here in Rotherham, FLUX Rotherham and Rotherham Minster have partnered together for this new ‘creative venture’.
Sophie Ellingham, Children’s Capital of Culture Festival Maker and Project Lead for Flux Rotherham said: “Bringing the Museum of the Moon art installation to Rotherham is an incredible opportunity for us.
“Having the opportunity to showcase and plan amazing installations such as this one in our town has been an incredible experience for me, and I can’t wait to see the public’s reaction.”
Living in the UK but working internationally, Jerram creates artworks at all scales that are known to deliver messages and inspire communities to often recognise ‘challenging concepts’.
The Museum of the Moon is one of Jeram’s most successful projects to catch the public’s imagination.
The moon has been displayed 300 times in 30 different countries.
Surround sound composition crafted by the esteemed BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer, Dan Jones, are part of the exhibition experience.
The exhibition showcases ‘high resolution’ NASA imagery of the lunar surface.
Measuring 7 metres in diameter, each centimetre of this internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5 km of the moon’s surface.
The official public launch for the art was on 18 November, and it will be displayed at the Minister till 30 November.
During its stay in Rotherham, the Museum of the Moon will be suspended inside the 55m high tower of Rotherham Minister.
The doors are wide open to the public, offering free viewing and accepting school visits.
Helen Jones, director of FLUX Rotherham said: “This will be a fantastic couple of weeks for the town. I’m really looking forward to welcoming thousands of people to this free event, offering something truly out of this world in their hometown.”
Following the official public launch, a number of organisations have pooled in to provide various diverse range of activities and programmes.
These activities range from yoga sessions to offering insights into the thriving artistic community.
The Reverend Canon Phil Batchford of Rotherham Minster said: “We are delighted to be able to partner with Flux Rotherham and host the Museum of the Moon at Rotherham Minster.
“We are passionately committed to the life and regeneration of our town and hope this will in some way contribute to that.”
