Help 4 Homeless Veterans is a non-profit organisation that operates in Sheffield rehousing veterans who can’t find social housing.
The charity operates across Sheffield and since it opened 10 years ago, has assisted over 1000 veterans with housing problems, and stays open due to grants from supporters and donations from the public.
Steven Bentham-Bates, the CEO of Help 4 Homeless Veterans, said: “My own grandad was a professional soldier throughout the First World War before getting wounded on the Somme and losing his elder brother. That affected the family at the time and still does.
“I served in the RAF for 24 years and I did three tours in the Falkland Islands after the war there and also helped in Cyprus in 1974 rescuing holidaymakers when the Turkish invaded the island.”
The charity recently received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service last year after it tackled increased demands due to the cost of living crisis.
Mr Bentham Bates, who was awarded the ‘Unsung Hero Award’ by the mayor of South Yorkshire in 2014, said: “The Kohima Epitaph sums it up for me for all those young men who went out to fight for us and our country.
When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today. And we should never forget that.”
