A man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after Adam Johnson’s death in last month’s game between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers.
On Tuesday 14 November, a man was arrested by South Yorkshire Police in connection with Johnson’s passing and remains in police custody for the time being.
On Saturday 28 October, Johnson, 29, suffered a fatal cut to his neck during the game between the Steelers and the Panthers.
A post-mortem examination confirmed he died as a result of the injury he sustained.
The Steelers paid tribute to Johnson in their first home game after the incident on Sunday 12 November, a 2-1 win over Coventry Blaze.
Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall said: “We have been carrying out extensive enquiries to piece together the events which led to the loss of Johnson in these unprecedented circumstances.
“We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our enquiries and continue to work with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council.
“Adam’s death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world.
“Our thoughts remain with all affected by this devastating incident as enquiries continue.”
Fans who are struggling to process the events that took place have been encouraged to seek support.
