South Yorkshire Police have issued a warning to only travel if it is essential as Storm Babet continues to rage across the UK.
Earlier today the Met Office upgraded the weather warning for rain across Yorkshire and Humberside from yellow to amber, with the conditions expected to continue for the rest of the day and throughout the night.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have been inundated with various reports of disruption or people in need of assistance due to the effects of the storm.
They have been posting advice to residents on X about how to deal with potential flooding and how to check for the latest flood alerts to keep up to date.
Area Manager of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Simon Dunker said: “We’re working closely alongside other public agencies to plan for possible flooding across the region, with multiple flood alerts and flood warnings.
“We’ve already been called to respond to incidents involving people who’ve become trapped in vehicles after driving through flood water- please pay attention to road closure notices and do not drive through flood water.
“River levels in Sheffield are expected to peak this evening and in Doncaster on Saturday afternoon, and we strongly advise people to sign-up to receive alerts about flooding in their area, if they do not receive them already.”
At the moment, there are 38 disruptions being reported on the Travel South Yorkshire website, calling the effects of Storm Babet ‘very severe’.
Flood defenses have been put up around Meadowhall due to flooding and many areas are underwater as to rivers and streams that have burst their banks, including the popular Endcliffe Park in Sheffield which is now unrecognisable.
