Kids Plant Trees are raising money in order to give more children across South Yorkshire the ability to spend more time outdoors and surrounded by nature.

Co-founder Stephanie Mullen said, “We get kids outside, spending more time in nature and doing active things that help in their local green spaces.”

Activities are often held in parks, the local playgrounds and many other spaces with the aim to elevate the area together with the children.

She said, “It is a collaborative process. We have a big focus on children, getting them involved and their choices heard.”

Kids Plant Trees not only work with the children but also with a tree expert, ensuring that the best possible plant will thrive in that area of green space.

The non-profit organisation mainly works with primary schools and also prioritises schools in low income areas or places with less nature.

When asked why children are their main focus, Ms Mullen also said, “To nurture their relationship with nature. The idea is that they would want to protect it as they grow up.”

Today, fewer than one out of ten children regularly play in wild places, compared to almost half a generation ago (2012 Natural Childhood Report Commissioned by the National Trust).

Ms Mullen believes it is imperative to get more children outside interacting more with nature.

She said, “ We know it is a problem and we are just doing our best to adjust it. We don’t need discussion, we need action.”

The fundraiser has already raised £215 and is calling for more public help, as the organisation has lots of plans.

She added, “ We are a very small team with limited resources.”

The money raised would be used for essential equipment, first aid training and delivering activities at a low cost, or even free, for children who may not get the opportunity to do so.
