A generous couple has encouraged others to donate to their charity complain to help families hit hard during the cost of living crisis.
It started when Diane was working at a local supermarket and decided to donate toys to disadvantaged families, using unused banana boxes at the end of the tills.
Years later, Diane, 57, and Ronny, 63, aim to fill banana boxes with educational and age-appropriate toys, all to support children from lower-income backgrounds.
The charity so far has supported 16,002 children in the Selby area.
Diane said: ‘The demand has definitely increased, it really has. The cost of living crisis hasn’t helped either. Last year I gave out 160 boxes, it has increased to 241 this year.’
The couple have a small team of trained volunteers around them, but they have to work hard to keep up with referrals.
‘We took early retirement because the whole charity has increased a lot, we dedicate most of our time to these projects that we do.’
‘The building we work in is grade 2, so in this weather there’s no heating, it’s freezing.’
‘I’m sure we’re not the only people who do it, but we’re proud of it.’
The charity confirmed that 30% of referrals from food banks and social services are to provide banana boxes for children with special needs.
The couple’s work also extends to throughout Yorkshire, running Christmas parties and toy banks for families who can’t otherwise afford presents for their children.
Diane added: ‘The people are very appreciative, it took a weight off them. To see the look on the kids’ faces when they get their presents from Santa.’
In the future, they plan on opening an afterschool club for children, after noticing a need for more support for parents who can’t afford childcare in the Selby area.
