A man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after Ice Hockey player Adam Johnson’s neck was cut during a match.
The Nottingham Panthers player was injured during a game at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield against the Sheffield Steelers.
Adam Johnson was 29 and had previously played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League in the United States of America.
He was soon taken to hospital and pronounced dead.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday by South Yorkshire Police and has remained in custody since.
A coroner’s report on the case suggested that due to the fatality, neck guards should be worn by all Ice Hockey players worldwide.
Det Ch Supt Becs Horsfall, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “We have been carrying out extensive inquiries to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances.
“We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our inquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation.
“Adam’s death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world.”
Additionally, she urged members of the public to not speculate on the case which could hinder the ongoing police investigation.
Proceedings are ongoing.
