It’s Black History Month and if you’re looking for a way to celebrate or educate yourself and others, The Black Ladies Group exhibition is the perfect choice.
The project is being showcased at Weston Park Museum in Sheffield and aims to preserve and pass down the stories of black women to future generations.
The Black Ladies’ Group collaborated with Sheffield’s Roots and Futures partnership to create the exhibition and promote an understanding of black history.
A spokesperson from The Black Ladies’ Group said: “We came together from the Victoria Methodist Church when the community worker there talked to Cynthia about getting the Black Ladies together.
We formed a Black Ladies’ Group and this has been going on since about 1985-1986. This was the first ladies’ group in the area.”
The exhibition showcases photographs and transcripts, alongside symbolic items that remind the women of life in Jamaica and the experience of settling in Sheffield.
Black History Month Magazine editor, Cherron Inko-Tariah, told The Guardian: “While Black History Month would always be a time to celebrate all sorts of black Britons, there has been a point where black women’s voices have been silenced and their ideas and contributions ignored.”
The exhibition is free and open to the public until the 1st of November and is a great way to celebrate black history during this month.
