The Met Office has issued a Yellow warning for snow and ice over the coming days.

Sheffield is expected to be the worst-hit area in England, according to the latest Open Weather forecast.

The forecast for tonight indicates a spell of heavy rain, sleet, and snow moving northwards, with higher ground likely to see heavy snow accumulation.

By Tuesday morning, the weather will gradually clear to the south, followed by drier conditions and brighter spells in the afternoon.

At least one school, Outwood Academy City, has closed due to the weather conditions today.

As rain, sleet, and snow clear on Tuesday morning, untreated surfaces may become icy, posing a risk to pedestrians and drivers.

Lowfield Primary School have delayed their opening time until 10am today to allow for safe travel.

Sheffield City Council has confirmed gritters left the depot at 2pm to begin gritting all Sheffield priority gritting routes prior to forecasted snow later this evening.

Over 60% of the highway network is gritted in priority order, including the main routes linking the city to others.

Priority 1 routes include main arterial roads, while Priority 2 routes cover bus routes, key public service facilities, and rural roads.

The council monitors weather conditions via two weather stations in Sheffield and a dedicated Met Office forecaster for daily updates.

On higher ground, additional gritting may be necessary due to lower temperatures, with gritting of Priority 1 and 2 routes taking up to five hours.

Gritting typically occurs overnight when roads are quiet, though gritting can happen during the day if conditions require it.

Cycle lanes adjacent to priority routes are gritted, but segregated cycle lanes and those in parks or housing estates are not.

Sheffield council grits the busiest pavements and pedestrian areas, including those around the two main hospitals and the city’s train station, but residential pavements are excluded.

This map shows primary gritting routes in red and secondary routes in blue, by entering your postcode, you can see if your area is covered.
