Angela Rayner has declared that 2.4% of the UK’s £10 million fund for homelessness will be given to Sheffield City Council.
The fund aims to pay for as many rough sleepers as possible to get off the streets and into a warm bed, especially as winter is approaching.
Sheffield City Council will receive £241,162 from the fund.
Rayner said: “We are approaching the harshest months of the year, so we are taking immediate action to reach anyone sleeping rough and help them off the streets this winter.”
The emergency funds prioritise the areas which are most in need, with Sheffield having one of the highest rates of rough sleeping, aside from London.
Other councils across Yorkshire will also see funds, including Rotherham (£24,182), Doncaster (£22,807) and Barnsley (£35,165) Council.
With Rayner chairing the first cross-government group on tackling homelessness, she went on to add: “Anyone forced to sleep rough on our streets represents a complete failure of the broken system we’ve inherited. It’s a national disgrace, and we can’t keep sticking plasters on it.
“Bringing together Ministers across government is a crucial step to tackle this crisis at its root, to ensure everyone has access to the basic right of safe, secure housing.”
This action follows 155 people dying from sleeping rough on the UK’s streets last year, with rates predicted to continue rising.
