Noting what he describes as a ‘crisis in mental health’, a Barnsley gym owner has launched a free 8 week mental health bootcamp aiming to improve the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the local community.
Chris Newton, the owner of the Grassroots Sports Academy, said: “There is a clear need for some support for people who are genuinely struggling, the aim is purely and simply to give them free access to something to help them regain control of their life.”
According to the leading mental health charity Mind, one in four people in England will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year.
The classes ran by Grassroots are catered to support anyone struggling with depression, anxiety, addiction, or any other forms of mental health issues.
Mr. Newton said: ”These classes are free and specifically done away from anyone else, so it’s just that core group on their own.”
The class entails different circuit based fitness stations all tailored to each individual person’s capabilities, with one session each week being put aside for fun and bonding activities such as dodgeball.
Participants are given support from the coaches, who know and understand the challenges individuals in the class are facing.
“The biggest barrier is getting them inside the class, once they are in, they are more comfortable and surrounded by like minded individuals.”
Mr. Newton explained that previous mental health bootcamps they have held have been really successful: “A lot of people have said that they are one hundred percent off their medication, and they have been able to return back to their normal life.”
The groups have got a limited number of places, which is to ensure they can give individuals the support they need and not ‘dilute’ the service.
To take part in the classes you must be over the age of 18 and can apply by filling out the confidential form on their website.
