Providing Christmas gifts for isolated and vulnerable elderly people, The Sheffield Shoebox appeal are asking for as many donations as possible, after missing out on their target for the first time last year.
The charity is looking at giving out 2,700 boxes this Christmas, but says they are struggling to meet the goal amid the cost of living crisis.
Christine Sexton, who has been working with Sheffield Shoebox for eight years said: “Last year was the first year we didn’t get enough boxes; it’s never happened before.”
The Shoebox Appeal, which started in 2013, is an annual pre-Christmas event that encourages the community to donate shoe boxes filled with essential items and small treats, providing a gift and comfort to individuals struggling during what can be the most challenging time of year.
Ms Sexton said: “There are a lot of charities in Sheffield collecting gifts for children, but we’re about the only one collecting for adults.
“One elderly woman told us it was the only present she had received in five years. We’ve had women in refuges saying they didn’t expect anything. A lot of women struggling against homelessness or substance issues will do all they can to ensure the children receive presents, but to get one themselves – they love it.”
The box requirements usually include socks, hats and other goods to keep people warm throughout the winter, but Ms Sexton said it’s good to include treats such as chocolates, puzzles, books and personalised items such as picture frames.
Ms Sexton said: “There is only about four or five of us who run the charity, I think this year we’re working with over 40 charities and services that help disadvantaged people. It can go to hostels and charities helping homeless individuals who face alcohol and drug issues.
“We also work with Sheffield Women’s Aid and the charity Ashiana, who help Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee adults.
“Ashiana is amazing, they help children and young people fleeing domestic and sexual abuse, including forced marriage, human trafficking, female genital mutilation, gang violence, and ‘honour’ based violence.”
This Christmas, the Sheffield Shoebox Appeal is specifically requesting gifts for men, as they have received a disproportionate number of women to men’s presents in the last few years, so the charity is hoping for an equal amount this year.
Ms Sexton explained that one man she delivered a gift to last year, who stayed at Ben’s Centre (a sanctuary for the vulnerable in Sheffield), said it was ‘the best thing to ever happen to him’.
Ms Sexton said: “Our view is that everyone deserves a Christmas present.”
