Prague is well-known for its ancient bridges, fairy-tale architecture and thriving cultural scene. But if you explore around a little, you will find a secret world of esoteric mysteries and alchemical intrigue that very few tourists ever get to see.

During the 16th century, Prague was the undisputed epicentre of alchemy in Europe, attracting legendary practitioners like Tycho Brahe and Edward Kelley to its winding streets. Today, the city’s alchemical heritage remains alive, offering intrepid travellers a chance to delve into the arcane mysteries that once captivated the city’s elite.

Prague Castle

Start your alchemical adventure at the iconic Prague Castle, where you can marvel at the curious astronomical symbols etched into the famous astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall. This mediaeval masterpiece not only tells time but is also believed to conceal deeper alchemical secrets within its intricate mechanisms.

Just a short stroll away, the soaring spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn reveal their own surprises. Peer closely at the façade and you will spot astrological symbols that hark back to the golden age of alchemy in Prague, when this grand cathedral may have even played host to convert alchemical experiments.

Speculum Alchemiae

No alchemical odyssey in Prague is complete without a visit to the Klementinum, a sprawling Baroque library complex that was once the nerve centre of the city’s arcane studies. Wander the grand halls and marvel at the astronomical instruments used by court astronomers, then seek out the hidden chambers where legendary alchemists like John Dee and Edward Kelley conducted their secretive experiments.

But the real magic of Prague’s alchemical heritage lies in the city’s hidden nooks and crannies. Stroll the cobblestone streets of the Old Town and keep an eye out for subtle alchemical symbols etched into building facades or peek into the windows of shops displaying paraphernalia. For the truly adventurous, venture into the city’s extensive network of underground tunnels and cellars, where whispers of past alchemical rites and rituals still linger.
