Saudi Arabia strikes the global perception of food and corresponding culinary connoisseurs through its unique blend of traditional flavours, spices and adjacent cultural influences.

The predominant use of aromatic herbs, including saffron, cumin, cloves, coriander, cardamom and cinnamon constitute the blueprint formula for the rich and flavourful dishes.

The expansive availability of dates and avid appetite for Arabian coffee categorises the two as notable components of the Saudi culinary specifics, a strong symbol of their tradition and means of hospitality perpetuation.

Rice retains an equally hierarchal position – often served with a choice of protein including lamb, chicken or fish, giving the traditional dish “kabsa” special place in Saudi gastronomy.

The culinary scene of Saudi Arabia exceeds the boundaries of territoriality, where each region offers its unique flavours and specialities, reflecting its diverse geography.

These regional variations are apparent in the traditional cuisine landscape, from the bustling streets of the capital city Riyadh to the delights found alongside the Red Sea.

The coastal area showcases seafood dishes predominantly, like “sayadieh“, and desert inspired fare influenced by Bedouin traditions whilst its Southern counterpart focuses on grains and vegetables as the base for dishes such as “bareesat“, reflecting on the region’s agricultural abundance.

The local inhabitants take great pride in presenting their dishes, emphasising a strong sense of communal dining experience.

Food is consumed in the presence of loved ones- family members and friends, often served from sharing platters to symbolise connection and intimacy.

Hence, the Saudi cuisine serves as a way of preserving and expressing the cultural and social identity of the Arabs of the Peninsula, renowned for their hospitality, generosity and warmth.

Saudi cuisine is equally impacted by a strong religious influence, where the Islamic dietary laws are predominant in influencing the permitted food preparation methods, ingredients and gastronomic practices.

Whilst some may categorise such practices as unconventional, the country is renowned as a producer of top quality meats, prepared using inherited ancestral methodologies of meat preparation and preservation practices.

Mandi, a popular dish with meat and rice, rich in flavours

Despite the accentuation of traditional delicacies, the culinary options available within the territory of Saudi exceeds region-specific dishes.

In addition, the country boasts a diverse and inclusive range of international cuisine, with restaurants specialising in foods specific to countries from across Asia and Europe.

As a result of this gastronomic expansion, the fusion of different cooking traditions and flavours has been a growing trend and led to the exploration of innovative ways to present and prepare traditional Saudi dishes.
