But it\u2019s time&nbsp; is coming to an end, and that\u2019s all thanks to its rival &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/unglossedmag.co.uk\/2025\/05\/22\/recession-pop-is-back-but-are-we-back-in-a-recession\/\">recession pop.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This trend has been making waves. People are rediscovering over-the-top makeup, loud pop&nbsp; music, and clubbing without shame. It serves as the perfect antithesis to the beige, image obsessed culture of \u2018clean girl\u2019 influencers, and I\u2019m so excited about it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t want to hear another \u2018come with me to my 6 am yoga class\u2019, \u2018come with me to try the new&nbsp; oat matcha latte\u2019, \u2018get ready with me while I tie a high pony and walk around my soul-less&nbsp; apartment.\u2019 I\u2019m sick of it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Unglossed: Songs That Shook Up Pop Culture\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" data-src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/3vAHEsxrVFc4zzqW3nSwDx?utm_source=oembed\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The beauty of recession pop is that it\u2019s not aesthetically pleasing. It\u2019s not profitable either, as&nbsp; cheap makeup, off brand vodka and dance music are all widely available. Those airbrushed&nbsp; tiktoks don\u2019t work with recession pop; instead of a relaxing GRWM it\u2019s a chaotic, drunken process&nbsp; with a poorly lit mirror and Pitbull in the background, possibly friends bursting into the room with a&nbsp; \u2018cocktail\u2019 that tastes like petrol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, being a \u201cclean girl\u201d is something you can buy, and that\u2019s what bothers me the most. Every aspect consists of paid promotions and partnerships, all in the influencer\u2019s bio, be it a\u00a0 sleep mask, a new viral bottle (special offer &#8211; link in our bio), the same yoga pants that everyone\u00a0 else has, and so on. But times change and thank god for that.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recession pop doesn\u2019t indulge in this kind of rampant consumerism, because it\u2019s all about&nbsp; making do with very little. Repeating the same clubbing outfits and finding ways to be a bit cheap&nbsp; is what it\u2019s all about, understandably, as the trend was born out of financial hardship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>People are rediscovering over-the-top makeup, loud pop\u00a0 music, and clubbing without shame.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Its background is also why I have faith in recession pop to restore some authenticity. That era of&nbsp; pop culture, we\u2019re talking 2008 to 2013, didn\u2019t have social media on the same scale as we do&nbsp; today. \u2018Influencers\u2019 didn\u2019t exist. Nobody was posting photos from the club on their story because&nbsp; stories weren\u2019t even a thing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our obsession with showing off on social media has taken away our ability to just enjoy&nbsp; something for the sake of it. We don\u2019t see influencers getting sh*t faced at the club. Do you know&nbsp; who we DID see getting sh*t faced at the club? Paris Hilton. Lady Gaga. Kim K. Recession pop is&nbsp; telling us that just because we don\u2019t see it anymore on social media, doesn\u2019t mean we can\u2019t be&nbsp; authentic in enjoying ourselves, even when it doesn\u2019t look aesthetic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Come with me for my morning cardio routine.\u2019 No need. I ran from the club to my house at 4 am.&nbsp; \u2018Guys you have to try this new snack.\u2019 No thanks. I got a kebab on the way. \u2018Check out my&nbsp; business casual haul.\u2019 Again, no thanks. I\u2019ve got some random second hand top on. And guess&nbsp; what, I\u2019m having an absolute blast at a fraction of the price, while being myself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re only in our 20\u2019s, and to be honest, that\u2019s how life should be at that age.
