Volunteers from Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care will tomorrow take on a fire walk to raise money for elderly people in Sheffield.
The charity does vital work combating loneliness in the Steel City and helping those discharged from hospital get back into a routine.
Ericka Hill, fundraiser and marketing communications officer at Sheffield Four C’s, said: “They will set up a fire about two or three metres long… the temperature is over a 1000 degrees for a fire walk!
“It is a challenge but a lot of it is mind over matter… you’ve got to be brave and it is a real challenge.”
The charity was founded in 1966 and this year won the GSK impact award.
Mrs Hill said: “We have around 200 volunteers, sadly we have over 200 users on our waiting list… We are always looking for volunteers.
“We are always looking out for other cultures and people who speak different languages to help us support all of Sheffield, our whole community.”
Sheffield Four C’s combat loneliness with their befriending service, where volunteers are assigned to people in the community to have regular chats with those in need.
The team also assists people recently discharged from hospital, helping them with shopping and settling back into everyday life.
Mrs Hill said: “We do a pen pal scheme as well which is where we ask members of the public to write in letters and cards and draw pictures and then we send those out to our isolated service users. They love it, they love getting cards from children and they can display them proudly in their homes.
“It is just really nice to have that social connection because we do find that a lot of old people are forgotten about and we want to make sure that they still feel valued and part of our community.”
About 20 people will be attempting the fire walk tomorrow at 5pm at Fox Valley shopping park in Stocksbridge.
