The M1 motorway had to be closed yesterday after a man ran onto the busy carriageway as a way to escape from police.
The ordeal began in Rotherham, when a grey Volkswagen Golf was reported stolen and believed to be on false plates. The vehicle failed to stop for police officers and the chase began.
The vehicle then crashed into a set of traffic lights on Shepcote lane; both driver and passenger then fled the vehicle and were chased on foot by police.
One of the men ran on to the M1 motorway, close to junction 34, which lead to the M1 being closed for a short period of time. South Yorkshire police said: “One man, aged 19, was detained by officers for failing to stop, dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle and burglary. He has been bailed as enquiries continue.”
“The second man who Fled the vehicle remains outstanding at this time.”
