Primary school children from Rotherham rolled up their sleeves and got involved with autumn planting at a community garden.

The group of pupils from Trinity Croft Church of England Primary Academy, named the ‘Gardening Gang’, got to work at the community garden in Ridgeway, East Herringthorpe.

The Gardening Gang previously planted over 200 spring bulbs in Rotherham.

Councillor Michael Bennett-Sylvester, Ward Councillor for Dalton and Thrybergh, said: “It is fantastic that pupils are able to help in their communities with, literally, grassroot activities like this. It offers them so much enrichment while teaching them new skills and creating new hobbies they can enjoy for years to come.”

The Gardening Gang is overseen by Family Support Worker, Stacey Parkin, who has been working with the Council’s Neighbourhoods Team on outdoor projects. Stacey was also on site to lend a hand in the planting.

Councillor Joanna Baker-Rogers, Ward Councillor for Dalton and Thrybergh, said: “I am pleased to hear that the children were able to take part in the planting and enjoy learning about the garden. The space was created for the community and we hope by involving people and creating more opportunities like this, the garden will be enjoyed and sustained for years to come.”

The planting is the first community involvement activity on the site, which was redeveloped as part of the Council’s Towns and Villages Fund improvements.
