For the past month, Willis Marshall of S12, towards Base Green, has been litter-picking around the area in which he lives in the hope of combatting the endless amount of litter being left behind.

“Every Sunday from about 10am to about 2pm, I go litter picking around roughly the area where I live. It’s all got a bit untidy and there’s been quite a bit more since COVID, so it’s been going out to try and get rid of the litter.”

Having been part of community groups growing up, Willis wanted to give something back to the area around him.

“Social groups supported me through my childhood, so I just wanted to do something for the community.”

When asked how many bags he has managed to collect he said three to four full bags on his own.

“Well, some areas are worse than others. The main street that goes through the estate, I have to do twice because between the first time and then coming back to it, more litter has been dropped.”

Dedicated to protecting the environment, Willis has no plans to stop the collections, continuing through the winter months.

Using Facebook, Willis asks members of the S12 community page which areas need doing the most and gives information on his route for those wanting to help.

Amanda Walker, a fellow litter picker commented: “White Lane is always a mess, me and my friend do usually that or Birley Lane. Can’t keep on top of it, as soon as you’ve done it, it’s a mess again. People throw things out of cars or stuff they have bought from Co-op.

“Good to know we aren’t the only ones trying to keep the area clean.”

His community work has not only encouraged others to partake but also raised the question of whether councils are doing enough at a local level.

Joe Savage, a member of the community page said: “Pity not everyone has the attitude and desire to make their community and city a nicer place to live like you pal. Sheffield is a shameful place with the amount of people throwing their litter everywhere. It warms my heart that some people like you still care about their city and neighbourhood.”

With over 1,300 likes on his Facebook posts, Willis has certainly got support from his community and will look to inspire others to do the same.

“I have been going every week for the past three weeks. I don’t really intend on stopping at the minute, presumably there will be a stop to it at some point, but I’ve not got a specific set date for that or the desire to stop doing it yet.”
