For two weeks in a row, controlled heather burning has taken place on Broomhead Moor.
The fires have caused Sheffield to be covered in a blanket of smoke.
Locals and celebrities took to social media to voice their thoughts.
Chris Packham, television presenter and environmentalist, said on X: “They just don’t care at all. Not about the planet, not about ecology and not about all the kids with asthma in Sheffield. It’s time to shut this down.”
Sheffield MP Olivia Blake tweeted: “Moorland burning is a dangerous, destructive practice. Every year, 260,000 tonnes of CO2 are released from burning on peat in England. It also has incredibly worrying public health impacts.
“We urgently need to see a ban, our lungs protected and our peatlands restored. I’ve written to Sheffield City Council and Natural England to see what more enforcement can be undertaken.”
The Moorland Association claim that controlled burning reduces the risk of wildfires.
