A farm on the outskirts of Sheffield has put in an application to increase its size by 200%, according to PETA.

Over 15,000 people have signed a petition urging Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to reject the application.

PETA claim there would be nearly 1,800 pigs “condemned to death” a year on the farm after the expansion.

Kate Werner, PETA Senior Campaigns Manager said: “From the increase in odours and potential environmental harm to the knowledge that thousands of sensitive pigs would suffer and many would perish inside filthy sheds, the proposed expansion of this facility must be stopped.

“If Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council members visited one of these intensive farms, saw the terrified animals, heard their screams, and smelled the putrid stench of ammonia, faeces, and rotting flesh, they would surely refuse plans to expand this hellhole.”

The group say that the expansion would mar the beautiful scenery and generate water, soil, and air pollution as well as high levels of noise, traffic, and unpleasant odours – which would undoubtedly disturb residents.
