A Sheffield man has been sentenced after stabbing a 17-year-old to death in a street brawl.

Peshawa Ghaffour, of Birkendale Road, Walkley, was found guilty of manslaughter after he took a knife from the kitchen of an Indian resturant on Crookes road and used it to attack his victim.

Sheffield Crown Court heard how Ghaffour had an altercation with his ex-partner at the resturant on the evening of Thursday 25 May 2023.

His ex-partner called her two sons to explain what had happened and shortly after, one of her sons and his friend, Mohammed Iqbal, arrived at the resturant and a street fight broke out.

Witnesses recalled seeing Ghaffour pull out a large knife which he used to fatally stab Mohammed, who later died in hospital from the single stab wound.

Upon his arrest, officers searched Ghaffour’s home, where they found a flick knife and a taser, and further enquiries led detectives to establish that he took the knife used to kill Mohammed from the kitchen during the altercation with his ex-partner.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Kemp, said: “Throughout this investigation, we have been committed to finding justice for Mohammed and his family.

“Mohammed’s family have been present throughout the trial and have shown the utmost dignity as they listened to the tragic circumstances of how Mohammed lost his life played out in court.”

At the trial, the 30-year-old pleaded guilty to the possession of prohibited weapons and was found guilty of manslaughter.

He was sentenced on Friday 24 November to seven years imprisonment.

Detective Chief Inspector Kemp added: “Sadly, knife crime continues to take lives both here in South Yorkshire and across the country.

“This must stop, and as a force, we are committed to doing all we can to bring those who carry and use knives to justice.

“We cannot tackle the issue alone and therefore I want to take this opportunity to say to the community that if you know someone who carries a knife, please reach out to us and tell us.”

Jahmal Mendez, 18, of Myrtle Road, has been charged with affray in connection to the incident and is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday 4 December 2023.

He has currently been released on bail.
