This evening, the people of Sheffield are set to welcome the return of the popular quiz night, in a bid to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
The quiz will run from 6pm at Wildcard Bar and Grill, Ecclesall road.
James Gregg, radio 5 DJ who grew up in Sheffield, is one of the charity ambassadors and will be presenting the quiz.
There’ve been multiple famous faces attend previous nights. One being Kyle Walker, who attended last summer, alongside other footballers and world champions.
The Wildcard quiz night happens every four months. It started remotely in lockdown when alternative ways to raise money weren’t possible and has continued successfully.
Robert Gurruchaga, 42, the development officer for the charity, said: ”Fundraisers like this allow the hospital to have big dreams that can come true.
”Someone spends £15 on a ticket, that might seem not much to them, but they all add up together and make a huge difference.”
The money raised allows the hospital to make upgrades that the NHS can’t offer, previously building a new Cancer and Leukaemia ward and last year the money went to a £6 million helicopter pad.
Mr Gurruchaga said the helicopter pad is set to ‘save lots of lives’ as now the helicopters can fly directly to the hospital and take patients to places further than Sheffield, in Yorkshire.
The most raised at a wildcard quiz night so far is £7000. The event has many local businesses and companies buy tables as well as local parents and families who may have used the hospital.
The evening will have a raffle, food, and festive cocktails. As done in previous years, the charity brings down one of the large snowflakes hung in front of the hospital to auction. Last year this raised £360,000, as they get sponsored by companies and schools.
To fit the festive theme, staff will be wearing Christmas jumpers, there’ll be Christmas questions and a festive cocktail on offer. Especially during Christmas, the charity try everything they can to offer distractions to patients.
Mr Gurruchaga often brings famous faces to the hospital, many footballers have paid a visit, Jessica Ennis also recently went to meet patients. Dom Calvert-Lewin, the Everton football player is set to visit on Wednesday.
