Professional boxer Liam Cameron celebrates one year sober amid his boxing ‘comeback’.
The boxer from Littledale in Sheffield celebrated his 33rd birthday and ‘one year sober’ on Saturday.
Mr Cameron said: “It was good but it was just a little goal. I’ll never drink again, that’s 100%.
“A year’s an achievement, but it’s just an ordinary day. It’s nice to say I’ve not drunk for a year.”
The Commonwealth Champion served a four year ban from the sport from 2018-2022 due to alleged ‘minute tracing of cocaine’ – which he unwaveringly denies.
In July 2020, Mr Cameron’s step daughter Tiegan Scott passed away in a tragic car accident in Skegness when she was 20 years old.
Following this, after his ban had ended, Mr Cameron’s alcohol addiction became worse, he gained 56kg in weight, and was eventually hospitalised in October 2022.
He said: “I thought I was going to die. I couldn’t breathe. My chest was killing. I just said do you know what, this is it. I’ve got to stop it now because I’m not going to be here.”
The doctors said he was at severe risk of suffering a cardiac arrest, due to his heart rate being 168bpm – anything over 100bpm being dangerous.
When his addiction was at its worst, he used to ‘hear crying voices’ when he shut his eyes, and was drinking bottles of vodka and gin daily.
After achieving one year sober, Mr Cameron received his official boxing license again on 5 October this year.
He won his comeback fight which took place on October 6 at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield, against Robbie Connor from Scotland.
He said: “I’ve come back more motivated and the time out made me stronger. I think these are going to be the best years.
“During the four years though I was lost. I didn’t know what to do. When I got back I thought this is it. Now I’m putting everything in it.
“I’ve got about four or five years left, that’s a long time in boxing. I’m gonna do it right. My goal is to be British Champion.”
