After a year delay residents grow inpatient as Sheffield council fail to provide their promise of a road safety action plan.

Alexi Dimond, Green Party Councillor for Gleadless Valley, has been chasing the council for progress on the plan as it was initially set for early 2023.

Coun Dimond said: ‘’I have not seen any evidence of this road safety plan, if I am honest I am not sure it exists.

‘’In the meantime, they have taken out road safety measures, for example in Crookes, Walkley and Nether Edge.

‘’So I think it is fair to say road safety is not a priority for Sheffield Labour party.”

Following the council meeting on 4 October 2023, Councillor Ben Miskell, Deputy leader of Labour party, addressed that a draft is to be shared for January 2024.

Coun Miskell said: ”I want this aspiration (for safer roads) to be a very ambitious one.”

Residents are frustrated at the lack of acknowledgement for cyclists and pedestrians as it seems the council are prioritising cars.

Stephen Morley, resident and daily cyclist, said: ‘’I have at least one incident of bad behaviour every fortnight that makes me question my safety as a cyclist in Sheffield.’’

These unsafe roads are a growing concern for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, especially in regard to child safety.

Coun Dimond said: ‘‘The council confirmed that Sheffield has the most dangerous roads for children 15 and under of any core city.”

He added: ‘’ I think it is really important for residents to contact their local Councillors and also Councillors on the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Committee.

‘’If they think public opinion is going in improvements for road safety they’re likely to go towards that vision.’’
