A men’s only English Conversation class for immigrants to practise speaking in a welcoming and friendly conversation group is being run by the Shipshape Community Hub.

Nearly 20,000 Sheffield residents consider English as their second language and a Sheffield community centre is helping to improve their proficiency.

The free sessions take place every Monday from 2pm to 3pm at the community centre in Nether Edge.

This is one of many sessions endorsed by Sheffield City Council’s Family, Adult and Community Education Service.

The City Council said on their website: “This service will provide learning activities that will improve the life chances of Sheffield adults and their families, and help them to inspire their future generation.”

The council works with other learning partners and the Voluntary, Community and Faith sector to ensure access to the most appropriate programme for every individual.

Sheffield City Council have partnered with SYMCA to provide non-english speakers with essential skills needed to thrive.

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) are also committed to improving skills for those in Sheffield who struggle with English as a language.

The SYMCA said on their website: “It’s really important for you to have the necessary skills and qualifications to get ahead in your chosen career path.”

The SYMCA are also funding adults living in South Yorkshire through the Adult Education Budget to support a number of important programmes such as English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

The sessions are taking place at ShipShape Community Hub, The Stable, Sharrow lane, S11 8AE.
