Student protestors took part in a rally for Said Zaaneen, a student at The University of Sheffield who is stuck in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Last week, student protestors vowed to keep fighting and demanding justice for the victims in the Gaza Strip after weeks of fighting.

Mr Zaaneen, 41, is a Ph.D. student at the University of Sheffield’s Urban Studies and Planning department, who has lost over 40 members of his family to the conflict and is unable to return to Sheffield.

Reports have said Mr Zaaneen is spending the winter in a makeshift nylon tent in the Al-Mawasi Humanitarian Zone in the North of Gaza.

Protesters gathered outside the University’s Student Union chanting ‘Free Palestine’, before making their way to Firth Court in a bid to make their voices heard by University management.

They are also seeking legal representation for Mr Zaaneen , as efforts to secure a visa remain in the works so he can return to the UK.

Over half an hour of chanting and speeches took place in the rain outside Firth Court.

Organisers confirmed that contact with Mr Zaaneen is still taking place with his internet being limited on a temporary phone.

A spokesperson for the University of Sheffield’s Palestine Society, said: “Despite contacting the University of Sheffield over a month ago for support in his visa application, the University has delayed the application process and failed to pursue all necessary avenues to ensure Said has his visa and is added to the Rafah crossing list.”

Protestors then returned outside the University’s Student Union, where they slammed the University over reported allegations of arming genocidal states.

The University of Sheffield have been approached for comment.
