A Strava competition by Sheffield students has raised over £3400 to support men’s mental and physical health.

The Strava art competition by The University of Sheffield’s Swimming and Water Polo Club were held throughout November.

Participants had the whole month of November to walk, run, swim or cycle and record it on a GPS tracking app to create the best drawing with their route.

Max Kinzett, the charity secretary of University of Sheffield Swimming and Water Polo Club, said: “For Movember this year we wanted to do a charity competition. It wasn’t just getting people to donate money because like uni students, it’s just there’s not too much money flowing about. We wanted to do something that was kind of inclusive of the whole club.

“Not all of our members can do the traditional grow a moustache for Movember, so we thought if we do this Strava competition, anyone can get involved.”

At the end of November, there were eight winners in the competition and they created strava drawings which included a present, a snowman, and a fish on map.

Mr Kinzett said: “We’ve done sports stuff in the past, but we didn’t raise as much money. We think that by doing this we’ve kind of opened it up to a lot more people.

“Because anyone who can do the sports can also do this Strava competition, like you can run it, you can walk it, you can cycle it. It’s more accessible, so there’s a lot more motivation behind people donating to Movember when there’s incentive for them.

“We’ve not done this before. Instead of making drawings of it, we think it’s quite cool, and this year we’ve raised over 3000 pounds now, we’re really happy with it.

“We’ve had feedback from people saying that they’ve really enjoyed it, you don’t feel like you’re doing charity because it’s almost like fun, whereas doing this competition, it’s creative.”
