The S12 Community Pantry in Frecheville has planned to give Christmas hampers to help children in poverty throughout Christmas.

The community group aims to prepare Christmas hampers containing toys and festive cards crafted by children, and a pack of food for Christmas dinner by 18 December.

Jayne Caron, founder of the pantry, said: “That’s about showing children that Christmas isn’t all about receiving, it’s about giving as well.

“We’re gonna get the children to make the boxes up for the children that are less advantaged and show and explain that there are some children out there who don’t get anything at Christmas. So by us doing that, we’re giving them, we’re giving back to them.”

Kids participating in the event will contribute by filling shoeboxes with presents and writing Christmas cards for families.

Ms Caron said: “We’ve already got the boxes, so we’re just gonna be putting tables out and they grab a box and fill it with items for that child. Then we’re gonna ask them to write a little Christmas card and pop that in the box as well.

“It’s showing children that there are those in need out there, so they’re wanting to help, but then it’s bringing the community together because they’re all sitting here helping and thinking about others.”

The pantry is still taking donations to put in the shoe boxes, including sweets, toiletries and small toys for children.

Ms Caron said: “The event is about giving back to those who haven’t got much at Christmas. We’re gonna be providing 16 families with a Christmas dinner meal, and also a gift for each of the children in those families.

“They will get a toy and then they’ll also get a shoebox filled with goodies and treats. That’s the main aim that we’re giving back to the families that haven’t got the means to buy that themselves this year.”
