Palestine supporters blocked the entrances and exits of Sheffield University’s The Wave building, during its opening ceremony.

Students and lecturers were unable to leave or enter the building, preventing them from attending their lectures.

Security staff kept the majority of supporters outside the building, however, some managed to get through, walked up the central stairs and put a banner over the barriers, preventing the ceremony from commencing.

Ben Stewart, an Economics at the University of Sheffield, said: “I’ve been studying all day for an assignment which is due on Friday, and had a long day. I just wanted to go home and relax but I was unable to leave the building, which was frustrating”

The protests targeted the building as a result of the University’s partnership with BAE Systems, Boeing and Rolls-Royce and followed another protest last week.

The Wave is the home of the Faculty of Social Sciences, which has become a research hub.
