On this month every year, men across the globe can be spotted with grown out beards and moustaches for the Movember campaign.
Movember aims to raise awareness and funds for male mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.
It was first established in 2003, by a group of Australian men in a pub, who wanted to help men live happier and more fulfilling lives.
Over two decades later, the campaign has over 5 million supporters in 20 countries, with both men and women taking part in fundraising events and awareness campaigns throughout the month.
Men’s mental health is a pressing issue, with research finding that of the 115 people who die by suicide per week, 75% are male.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men in the UK, affecting over 52,000 men per year.
Testicular cancer is rarer but still affects around 2,300 men in the UK every year.
Movember has made significant contributions to research on these health conditions, raising over £400 million and funding 1,200 men’s health projects since its inception.
The University of Sheffield is also taking part in the campaign, with the aim of raising £50,000 this month through fundraisers held by the university’s sports clubs and societies.
Sheffield is home to several men’s mental health groups, including Sheffield Mind, Men Up North, and Andy’s Man Club.
Weston Park Cancer Charity also hosts support groups for men affected by prostate and testicular cancer, and has provided crucial support for research and clinical trials.
More information and ways to take part in the campaign can be found on the Movember website.
