72% of cyclists at Sheffield Cycling 4 All (S4CA) have said they have seen a massive improvement in their mental and physical wellbeing.
Sheffield Cycling 4 All (SC4A) is a project by Disability Sheffield that runs group cycling sessions for any adult who can’t ride a 2-wheel bike due to a disability or a long term health condition.
Rosemary Hill, one of the Project Coordinators at Sheffield Cycling 4 All, said: “I think its important everyone has an opportunity to cycle. You can really reap the physical and mental benefits.
“The big dream is consistent funding so that we can plan and do the projects our cyclists want to do.”
The organisation has been running sessions for over 15 years for those with physical impairments, brain injuries and those who are visually impaired.
Mrs Hill said: “Being told you can’t do something and then having the opportunity to do it has a big impact on people. I find it hard work, but also rewarding and wonderful.”
The organisation adapts bikes to the persons needs as well as campaigning across the region to support the disabled cycling community.
David Hessen, who has been cycling with the organisation for five years, said on their website: “I get quite a bit out of it because I didn’t do anything and I need the exercise. I fall down and always will. The more cycling I do the better it gets. It gets strength back in my legs so I don’t fall over as much.”
The organisation has shortened their sessions on 30 October, after the clocks went back, with their days now starting from 10.30am to 1.30pn Monday to Thursday.
