Sheffield City has been battered by torrential rain and strong winds which has caused cars to be stranded in floods and tram services to be cancelled.

A ‘do not travel’ warning has also been issued for the Northern rail Sheffield to Lincoln line due to heavy flooding.

The River Sheaf is on the verge of bursting its banks and local residents have been handed sandbags to protect their homes and businesses from flooding.

There are currently eight flood alerts on the River Don and River Sheaf in South Yorkshire.

Bus operators First South Yorkshire have diverted bus routes 52a and 72 because of road closures caused by flooding.

According to the Met Office, there is a 95% chance of rain in Sheffield, lasting until 3 p.m.
