The two Kent-based primary school teachers turned to podcasting. Their goal was simple: give UK teachers a voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cMy passion and interest in teaching began at primary school,\u201d Dylan says. \u201cI even remember all the names of my teachers. They were all fantastic. My own school experience shaped me into the teacher I am today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dylan, 31, is a primary school teacher and co-leads Maths at his school. His co-host, Hayden Stevens, 32, also teaches at the same school. Together, they launched <em> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/@teachsleeprepeatpodcast?feature=shared\">\u2018Teach, Sleep, Repeat\u2019<\/a><\/em>, a podcast that explores the struggles teachers face daily. They talk openly about the stress, the structural issues in education, and the emotional toll of the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They felt national strike coverage didn\u2019t reflect how teachers were really feeling. That\u2019s what pushed them to start recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Challenging the &#8220;martyr&#8221; mindset<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe were worried we were bad teachers,\u201d Dylan admits. \u201cWe weren\u2019t staying late or working weekends for free. There\u2019s pressure to go above and beyond your contract. We wanted to push back on that idea. Teachers shouldn\u2019t feel guilty for having a life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In the UK, teachers have &#8220;Directed Time&#8221; and &#8220;Planning, Preparation and Assessment&#8221; (PPA) time. Directed Time includes teaching hours and totals 1,265 hours a year. PPA is at least 10% of teaching time, often just 2\u20134 hours per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The contract also states that teachers must be available for duties at times and places the headteacher decides. But there&#8217;s more. It says teachers must also work &#8220;reasonable additional hours&#8221; to plan, assess, and meet pupils\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hayden says this is where the problem lies. \u201cThat paragraph is the most dangerous part of the contract. It gets abused. Some staff end up working 7\u20136 every day and over weekends. Schools fill Directed Time with tasks, leaving no space for planning or marking. They reject the idea that unpaid overtime equals professionalism. Dylan recalls feeling the same pressure early in his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI used to do loads of extra hours,\u201d he says. \u201cNow I work part-time. Cutting back probably saved my career. I was burnt out. And honestly, even working Monday to Wednesday, I still think about quitting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The mental health toll isn\u2019t just personal. Education Support, a UK charity, reports rising issues across the profession. In their latest Teacher Wellbeing Index:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">82% said pupil behaviour harms their mental health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">70% said difficult parent interactions do the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">84% said abuse from pupils has increased due to poor mental health support for students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Why Keep Going?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">So, why do they keep teaching? What fuels the passion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dylan says: \u201cYou\u2019ll never meet an entrepreneurial teacher. We\u2019re in it for the kids. I\u2019m good at it, and that\u2019s enough. Being a good teacher isn\u2019t just about fractions. It\u2019s about being a support system too. That\u2019s something I\u2019ve grown into over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hayden agrees. \u201cWe want to give everything to our pupils. We know not all of them have stable home lives. You often wish you could take them home. But it means the world to watch them grow, despite their circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The podcast idea had been forming for a while. But poor media coverage of the strikes gave them the final push. Since then, it\u2019s grown fast. They now have a 4.9-star rating on Spotify, 9,897 TikTok followers, and a top-10 spot in the UK educational podcast charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Hope, advocacy, and real talk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Despite all the challenges, the two teachers remain hopeful. Most parents and members of the public, they say, do support teachers. But the vocal 15% who criticise loudly can do real damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cMost people are supportive,\u201d Dylan says. \u201cBut that loud minority makes it tough. When you\u2019re overworked and underpaid, those voices can really hurt morale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Still, they believe things can change. And change starts by recognising the problem. \u201cWe\u2019re not saying teachers shouldn\u2019t ever work outside of Directed Time,\u201d Dylan clarifies. \u201cBut the contract needs to be clearer and less open to abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He adds: \u201cNo one\u2019s going to fight for us if we don\u2019t. Schools lean on unpaid labour because it\u2019s cheap. We need to speak up. The media won\u2019t always get it right.
