How South Yorkshire’s top women’s sides rank after 2024/25
Lewis Railton

With the 2024/25 season now drawn to its conclusion, each side in the South Yorkshire region has been ranked.

This season has been turbulent for several sides in South Yorkshire, with plenty of promotions and (even more) relegations resulting in a switch-up of the ranking of each club.

The bad news starts with Sheffield United Women, a side that struggled in the second tier of the pyramid this campaign. Picking up just one win throughout the Championship season meant that they were handed an 11th placed finish, although relegation to the National League is still uncertain due to the ongoing state of Blackburn Rovers Women.

No matter the outcome of this season, the Blades continue to sit top of the tree out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA teams. The National League North and Midlands divisions are packed out with South Yorkshire royalty, and Huddersfield Town, who are affiliated with the SHCFA.

However, there will be a changing of the guard between two sides with Sheffield FC emerging from the EMWRFL after winning the division, made even sweeter by their League Cup victory against fellow 5th tier side Rotherham United Women. They will swap places with Doncaster Rovers Belles, who have been condemned with a return to regional football for the campaign ahead.

Taking in promotions and relegations, Rossington Main Ladies will find themselves in the 6th tier, likely overtaking Sheffield United Community Foundation, if they drop down to the SHWGL Division One, whilst, as stated before, Sheffield FC will leapfrog the Belles into the top five in the region.

The highest rising sides since last season has seen Brunsmeer Athletic take top spot, moving up seven places having notched a successive title win after their SHWGL league victory in the 2023/24 season, whilst Just Football Women have emerged as a strong force in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Division One, recording a respectable 3rd place finish.

Looking outside of the top 20 in the area, SHWGL Division Two sides Wath Stars and YP Academy are the leading new sides in the area, having recorded a 2nd and 3rd place finish respectively.

Oughtibridge War Memorial’s First Team merging with their Reserves has meant a drop of 15 ranks in the local area, with them now sat in 24th.

Looking ahead to the new season, Brunsmeer will be a side to look out for, whilst many eyes will be on the Belles to see if they can bounce back after a damaging relegation to the 5th tier.
