Location managers are an integral part of TV production as there\u2019s an extensive process that transforms directors\u2019 visions into reality and allows audiences to admire the stunning visuals on screen.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9e4cb0174c373f237c06e977d3f15450\">Dee Gregson is a supervising location manager who has scouted prominent settings on some of the UK\u2019s most iconic TV shows, like Casualty, I\u2019m Alan Partridge, Sanditon and Alex Rider.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9a36e33df92bad43c09c02d08b91d7de\">Gregson says, \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of research that goes into it and it can be a grueling process. We produce these massive documents with hundreds of locations with all the details ranging from permits to availability to visual descriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f44e5cbadde489b0d5128413497c0cb8\">\u201cIt involves me speaking to all sorts of people in charge of these places. But I do enjoy the research.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d89aa4999826e02e3c37f9bc5e7e9840\"><strong>&#8220;I love the freedom that comes with it, travelling and learning new things and meeting new people\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d194453ccc04fe728d4adea96b95ec49\">A location manager\u2019s journey begins with the script. After a thorough reading, they\u2019ll meet with the production designer, who they work very closely alongside throughout the process all the way up to the end of filming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Watch: Behind the Scenes on Location\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I17UiqHN_QE?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you find a good location? <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1b0b3fd405d633f57e2702263d46389d\">Gregson says, \u201cI talk to the production designer about what they think they\u2019re looking for in terms of style and feel of each of the locations. I have to ask questions about these characters too. How well off are they? What\u2019s their personality? Are they obsessively tidy or slightly deranged?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3044b40eff4863ca81a561ad5fb45b5d\">\u201cSo I have a big database of locations with all these details, but we do try and not reuse the same places. If it&#8217;s a room in a house I\u2019ll be scouting around all the available houses we can shoot in to find that perfect room that fits the character best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ba31db1b560c6c1b71b0c13385ebaac1\">Gregson says: \u201cFor one show we were looking for a steam railway for a 1920\u2019s period drama, so I was researching steam railways all around the country and even up in Scotland. (Credit &#8211; Dee Gregson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Location Managing can be fun: <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4a1814128a66e37547d660178f5a9402\">Not every gig is so arduous, however. Gregson recalls the fun she had working on the Disney show Galivant: \u201cWe had to hire a boat called <em>The Matthew<\/em>, which is a reproduction of this 15th century sailing ship in Bristol. They had plenty of money so when I suggested the idea to do this boat reconnoitre (a \u2018reccy\u2019) down the coast they just said: \u201cYeah, go hire the boat.\u201d We sailed it down to Minehead, which I\u2019d found had the most unspoiled bit of coastline. The scene involved pirates on the boat and because they were filming it from a helicopter, we had to dress all the crew on the boat as pirates as well!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d0bedaa998eaad3cd24de1e053c330ae\">Often, location managers will resort to unique measures to scout new sets. Gregson jokes: \u201cThere\u2019s this handy website if I\u2019m looking for a church called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchcrawler.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Church Crawler<\/a> which has tried to photograph every single church!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a1af153da4fe0f8961f91425693b539f\">\u201cIf it\u2019s something very particular you consult with the experts in that subject and sort of pick their brains about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b7946493c43714e695ee0116a780c7a7\">\u201cI\u2019ll also take the balance of whatever location features heavily in the script and prioritise that. I visit those first and get loads of photographs and share those with the director and the production designer.
