A pop-up market in Hillsborough has raised £235 for the S6 Foodbank.

This comes after the S6 Foodbank stated that one in five local children, and 42,200 local adults, were declared to be in a food emergency from April 2023 to March 2024.

The organisation supports around 1,500 people a week across their 11 city-wide locations.

Makers Market, held on October 27 by Cut Up Collective, gathered donations for the foodbank on the door, while holding an event to promote Sheffield based artists, crafters and makers.

Anna Gregory, the Event Organiser, said: “In the last few years foodbanks are just more and more in need of help. So many people are using them now and I think it it’s such a good cause to donate to.

“They’re always needing money to get enough food for people especially during winter. People are going to be struggling with heating, so food is something that more people might need to get at a foodbank.”

The market was made up of various stalls, with locals selling items including paintings, jewellery, stickers and bags.

Theo Straut, who was selling t-shirts at a stall whilst promoting trans rights, said: “It’s really important that we’re also helping people out.

“The fact that it’s a community event and it’s not just benefiting people that are selling things makes it more fun and rewarding. Hopefully we can help out and make a difference all while making a bit of money for ourselves.”

Event organisers ensured that all sellers had strong links with Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

Mrs Gregory said: “Our aim was to raise some money for S6 Foodbank but to also have a not too expensive space for Sheffield artists to show their work.

“All of us event organisers are either originally from Sheffield or went to university in Sheffield, so it is nice to have those local events for the community. It’s hard to find markets that are affordable, nice and cosy, so we wanted to make a friendly environment for people to come to.”
