A convicted drug trafficker in Barnsley has been instructed to repay £95,000.
Jack Downend, who was jailed in June 2023 for 13 years because of his offences, is among a group of men required to repay profits from the offences in question.
In October, South Yorkshire’s Economic Crime Unit (ECU) ensured that over £120,000 would be recovered and reinvested into The Criminal Justice System.
Downend’s convictions include possession with intent to supply Class B drugs (cannabis) and evasion of drug import restrictions.
In their investigation, the ECU identified £95,000 in financial benefits from Downend’s illegal activities, looking at assets including bank holdings, property, vehicles, and luxury items.
Laura Hough, Acting Head of Economic Crime, emphasised the crucial role of community intelligence.
She said: “Community input helps us gauge how much these individuals benefit from their criminal lifestyles.
“If you see someone living beyond their means without a clear source of income, report it. They may be funding their lifestyle illegally.”
As a result, the funds recouped will go toward community support, positively impacting those affected by criminal actions.
