Blades derby win extends lead at top of the Development League

Sheffield United under-21s take the win in a precursor to the Steel City Development derby.

The evening fixture under the lights of Bramall Lane sets the stage for November 10th for the first Steel City derby since March 2019.

Despite the scoreline, Sheffield Wednesday largely dominated the first half, with young keeper Luke Faxon gaining plenty of valuable experience.

Louie Marsh, however, continued his strong form for the youth team and scored the first Blades shot of the game.

Marsh attained a penalty in the 61st minute of the game, with Wednesday coming up with the consolation goal in the 82nd minute from Devlan Moses.

Femi Sekiri also played a key role with an aggressive run up the pitch resulting in the penalty, as well as a host of defence interventions.

Sheffield United stands at the top in the English Professional Development, with 25 points from their opening games.

The Owls remain in 4th place with an inconsistent start to the year, which has seen them unable to push further up the table.

Gary McSheffrey, Blades’ under-21 manager, also handed valuable minutes to both club captain Jack Robinson and Sekiri after the pair recently returned from injury.

This fixture also saw the return of Kurtis Havenhand after an 18-month absence due to a serious knee injury.

McSheffrey will be aiming to achieve the club’s third consecutive title in the Development League, mimicking the form of the first team this season with their fixture being a second Yorkshire derby away in Barnsley.
