Britain’s largest defence company, BAE Systems, has announced a £25 Million investment, creating 50 new jobs in the area.
A new 94,000-square-foot site is set to be constructed in Sheffield. Work on the site is already underway, with plans to make the development operational by 2025.
The factory will specialise in artillery expertise and focus on delivering the Company’s M777 lightweight towed howitzer.
John Borton, managing director of BAE Systems’ Weapons Systems UK business, said: “Our aim is to deliver long-term artillery capabilities for the UK, which will safeguard, sustain and grow a critical, specialised British industrial capability as well as provide important opportunities for exports.”
The investment aims to enhance the UK’s defence manufacturing capabilities and contribute to the growth of the local economy.
Mr Borton also stated that the investment will aid them in developing a highly skilled workforce in Sheffield.
The M777 lightweight towed howitzer can fire various shells, including high-explosive rounds and has been used by military forces worldwide.
Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, said: “Sheffield is well known for its strong history of world-class engineering and advanced manufacturing and BAE Systems’ investment in a new artillery facility, and highly skilled jobs will ensure the city continues to play a key role in delivering both economic prosperity and national security.”
Sheffield’s rich history in manufacturing comes from steel production, with the city earning the nickname “The Steel City”.
This is the latest investment by BAE Systems, with more developments underway in Glasgow and Kent to upgrade previous systems
