Sheffield residents woke up to a snowy scene as overnight snowfall quietly blanketed the city, defying Met Office predictions of only sleet.
Though expectations for significant snow were low, the Steel City transformed into a subtle winter wonderland that residents found underwhelming.
Gritters were out last night across Sheffield’s significant routes. They looked to ensure no major roads were closed, though icy conditions have caused some localised disruptions.
AA Traffic reports no significant road closures this morning, though drivers are cautioned about slippery spots as the morning commute begins.
Schools are managing the icy conditions. King Edward VII School delayed its start to 10:30 a.m. to accommodate for icy roads in Broomhill and Broomhall.
Westfield School has confirmed it remains open, while other schools have not announced changes.
Public transport has been moderately affected. Several First Bus routes have been diverted or suspended, including the 18/18a between Hillsborough and the city centre.
Supertram has also suspended part of its Purple route, while train services are largely unaffected, aside from a reduced service between Doncaster and King’s Cross.
While the snow may not be as theatrical as some hoped, Sheffield’s wintery morning has provided a scenic backdrop for the day ahead.
